What is Botulinum toxin?
One of the critical events in the history of aesthetic medicine is the discovery of Botulinum Toxin as a treatment for facial wrinkles and lines. It was through the use of Botulinum toxin injection to treat strabismus (crossed eyes) that paved the way to this modern aesthetic solution.
Botulinum toxin is derived from a bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. An extremely diluted of this toxin is injected to the muscles to achieve the cosmetic treatment for Botox.
How does Botulinum toxin work?
A controlled amount of Botulinum toxin is injected to target muscles which temporarily paralyse them. Through this treatment, the smoothening of the wrinkles and fine lines are achieved.
How long does a Botox last?
Since the body neutralises the effect of the botulinum toxin, which takes around three to four months, repeated treatment between this timeline is necessary. During the first few treatments, a short period between injections may be needed. However, for some, after having maintained procedures for more extended periods, the frequency can be done around six months or more.
When will I see the result?
Botox result is not immediate. It takes around a week for the botox to become effective.
What is the side effect of Botox?
The most common are pinpoint bruising and minimal puffiness on the site of injections, they will disappear after a few hours to a day.
There is also the risk of an eyelid or eyebrow drooping. This is a temporary effect and can be treated with eyedrop medication for a short period of time.
Is there contraindication to Botox?
Botox is not used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Botox is also not done if you have active infections in the proposed areas.
Can the botulinum toxin cause permanent damage?
The substance used in Botulinum Toxin is controlled. It is not known to cause permanent damage, travel inside the body or migrate to other parts of the body since the substance attaches itself to the targeted muscles only.
What are the things I cannot do after Botox?
During the first four hours following the botox injections, avoid massaging the injected areas or do any facial treatment. Do not shampoo the hair nor do any strenuous exercise that entails bending, leaning or lying on the treated areas. Also, avoid wearing any tight hair bands or hat around the head.
Avoid doing any facial treatment such as electrolysis or laser for up to one week after the botox injections.
