Facial rejuvenation with the use of botulinum toxin injections is certainly not new. Over the years, botulinum toxin injections have been utilised not only for wrinkle reduction but also for other medical treatment such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpit or hands.
Botulinum toxin injection is ideally suited for younger individuals who are starting to have active facial lines and would like to prevent the lines from becoming present at rest. Lines that are visible at rest are difficult to treat with botox alone and a combination of botox and dermal fillers is recommended to enhance the overall treatment outcome. The botox treatment is done through multiple injections to the targeted areas. The doctor may ask you to smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows to determine the exact areas needed for injection.
Among the various type of fillers available in the market, the filler composed of hyaluronic acid is the most widely used because of its less allergenic character compared to other fillers. Also, the availability of hyaluronidase, the antidote which can counteract the effect of the hyaluronic acid, makes it a filler of choice for doctors.
The compounds in the fillers exert their effort by plumping up and filling in the underlying structure of the skin. This reaction softens and decreases the visibility of facial lines. In addition to facial lines, dermal fillers are also used to fill in hollow cheeks and augment the lips.
All in all, botox and fillers are not permanent treatments and therefore require repeated treatment session every few months to achieve an optimal result for facial rejuvenation.
