FACIAL REJUVENATION. Several factors accelerate the ageing process in the skin. Clinical signs of ageing include transverse forehead lines, crow’s feet, and loss of fat in the midface to name a few. Skin texture also changes as a result of ageing and of cumulative exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
Although we may not be able to completely hinder the ageing process, there some methods we may be able to improve them through facial rejuvenation treatments.
Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botulinum toxin injections are the most popular non-invasive treatment since its discovery. Today, it is used not only for fine lines and wrinkles but also for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the palms, underarms and feet) and chronic migraine. The treatment can be done in a matter of a few minutes and can be done anytime with little restrictions. After the injections, avoid massaging or lying on the treated areas or bending, leaning or exercising for a minimum of four hours after the treatment.
Botulinum Toxin Injection in Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women
It is still unclear if botulinum toxin can pass to a newborn through the breastmilk or cause harm to the foetus during pregnancy, it is best to avoid having the treatment altogether.
Dermal fillers are a great facial rejuvenation treatment. Most fillers in the market are composed of hyaluronic acids, a naturally-occurring substance in the body. Dermal fillers do not last a lifetime and will eventually be reabsorbed by the body. It can stay in the targeted areas from a year to a couple of years, depending on the type of fillers used.
Dermal filler treatments can last for 10-15 minutes.
Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment
PRP treatment is also known as the “Vampire Facial” or “Dracula Treatment.” It uses one’s own platelet-rich plasma, extracted from one’s blood (autologous). The treatment uses dermapen (pen-like handle with fine tiny needles on the tip) to open up the outer layer of the skin and for easy application of the PRP.
Preparation for PRP
A numbing cream (topical anaesthesia) is applied to the face and kept for half an hour. During this time, blood is extracted from the vein in the forearms. The collected blood is placed in a centrifuge (rotating) machine to separate the plasma from the red blood components of the blood. The plasma is a yellowish fluid that is highly concentrated with platelet which is effective in wound healing.
