Dermal Fillers: Hyaluronic Acid (HA)| Dr Maurizio and Dr Roberto Viel | DUBAI | LCAS GULF

As we age, loss of volume and changes in the skin occur. Lines, wrinkles, and dull skin may also be visible. The growing demand for treatments to slow down, much less hinder, the ageing process has contributed to doctors and researchers in discovering improved cosmetic treatment modalities. One of this treatment is through the injection of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to plump the skin and thereby lessening the appearance of lines.

There are several types of dermal fillers. However, this topic will specifically discuss the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

  1. What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring component in the skin. It provides volume and mechanical support to the tissues. In addition, it forms a fluid matrix in which collagen and elastin are firmly enveloped.

  1. Why is Hyaluronic Acid important?

HA is abundant in the lower part of the epidermis and provides mechanical support to the tissues. Importantly, HA holds unto moisture and helps provide fullness and radiance to the skin. With ageing, there is a decline in dermal components including HA which results in changes in aged skin such as decreased turgidity, increased wrinkling, and altered elasticity. Restoring HA levels can help reduce signs of ageing.

  1. Why Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers?

The unique properties of HA fillers make them ideally suited for soft tissue augmentation. Once injected HA fillers “fill” spaces and it is due to this filling effect that provides correction of folds, wrinkles and restores volume.

  1. What are the potential areas of use for HA fillers?

HA dermal fillers are used in several areas which include forehead wrinkles, frown lines, cheeks, marionette lines, smile lines, lips, chin, and pre-jowl.

  1. Is the injection painful?

Like any minimally-invasive treatments, minimal pain will be felt when the needle is inserted. The doctor may apply a local anaesthetic cream half an hour before or he can inject a local anaesthetic to numb the area before the treatment.

  1. How long will the HA filler last?

HA filler is not permanent and will eventually be absorbed by the body. The effects of  HA filler typically last for 6-18 months. Various factors, such as the amount of filler used, patient metabolism, and mobility of the treated area, may also influence the longevity of results.

The number of HA fillers has increased in the past decade and innovation continues. In many cases, a range of products is available for each brand, each with their own specific properties making them suitable for a certain application.
